During the ProAgro project we have assessed and adviced over 20 partners in the agri-food industry on their digitization journey. The delivered reports aimed to explore the digital situation together with the company, based on a questionnaire set up according to innomine's own methodology and tested in 100+ companies. Focus of the reports were on proposing ways to improve efficiency, optimise resource alignment and utilisation, presenting national and international good practices in areas for improvement, and describing concrete implementation with the corresponding technology and partner proposals for technology providers.

The benefits are as follows: Hungarian agri-food actors and stakeholders know little about digital transformation. Although they feel that this is necessary to survive and increase their competitiveness, they do not know how to get started. We gave this help with our tool and service: we looked at their current situation and helped to break down the complex digital transformation process into simple, small understandable and feasible projects (e.g. by presenting international best practices, transferring knowledge). We suggested digital transformation steps, and helped to get funding resources. A key factor is that through the former steps, we greatly reduced the risk for farmers and companies.

Első Beton Ltd is the leading supplier of liquid concrete building materials in South-East Hungary. It is also nationally recognized as supplier of concrete products, such as concrete elements for road buildings, industrial halls parts, innovative concrete solutions.

The manufacturing process – the concrete mix - has been traditionally fully off-line, when a modern pre-mix machinery has been installed. Several supporting processes were digitalized. Bookkeeping, invoicing, engineering of the pre-manufactured items, recipes of the different type of mix-concrete are stored in the cloud. The new machinery operation is software controlled, which opened new possibilities of enhancing digital state of the company. The management of Első Beton wanted to explore the opportunities to modernize the processes. They needed an experienced consultant, which can outline a plan of a more modern company, which is taking advantage of technology and can outline the roadmap for digital transformation. innomine – using its own methodology – assessed the digital maturity of the manufacturing company. Based on this the required digital transformation map was drown. Process maps, system architecture, data management plan, business, digital and marketing strategies has been outlined. It was also important, that the solution(s) are supported with working best practices and use cases. Beyond these possible digital solutions, applications detected and evaluated in order to provide practical solutions to cover the detected digital gaps.

During the “FET BRIEFING” project innomine organized several on-line events to introduce research results from the fields of sustainability to each other and to the business, industry. The major event by the closing of the project a „Research meets industry” event has been organized in two sessions. One session has been covering energy storage and conversion topic by introducing seven FET research projects, the second one displayed nine FET research projects’ results around new materials. The event offered safe space to the researchers to introduce early stage, low TRL level innovations, provided a good opportunity to build initial contact with and receive first feedback from the industry players.

This supported the dissemination and exploitation efforts of FET research projects and created opportunities to generate follow-up projects. From the business side over forty companies and technology transfer institutes attended, who wanted to boost their innovation power and wanted to be the first from their industry to see forward-looking research results. Among the industry members there were several multinational energy providers, costumer goods producers, construction companies, and investors as well – just to name a few.

Following the event 6 match has been created which are reportedly made a foundation for further discussion. Beyond the organization and orchestration of the event innomine was also responsible to prepare the FET researchers for the pitch by developing exploitation plans, presentations, coaching and training.

Digital Technopole is a single entry-point that provides a one-stop shop for tools and knowledge that can help SMEs to build resilience and agility in the turbulent post-Covid  times. The platform offers consultancy services, tools, softwares related to manufacturing repurposing (e.g.: simulation, digital twining, process development, production planning and optimalization), workforce reskilling and upskilling (e.g.: VR based training development, human-machine interaction re-design), supply chain digital support, product related services (e.g.: certification, life cycle assessment, circular economy maturity assessment) and many more. Beyond the SMEs, DIHs and industry associations are also invited to utilize the platform, and take advantages of its services.

The platform was developed in the framework of Co-Versatile project. innomine task was to develop exploitation plan of the platform, covering business model, target audience definition and dissemination. Post-project innomine was also commissioned to operate the platform, ensuring proper usage by qualifying and vetting the applicants both user and service provider side.

Creating cross-border experiments for the DIGITbrain open call and Experiment management and coordination.

Boosting digitalisation of SMEs
innomine main activity was the experiment deployment and execution during the whole DIGITbrain project (3 years).  We coordinated and overviewed the task's overall progress, while we were acting as a DIH as well and were assigned to support individual experiments in the implementation process. We provided „the bridge” between the participating experiment partners and the technical experts of the consortium that supported the experiments in technical issues when accessing the Digital Brain Data, Resources, Models, Algorithms etc.The experiments involved in the project were selected through 2 open-call processes by a committee of independent experts. innomine was also instrumental in finding and selecting the right experiment partners. Drawing on our own extensive international network, we were working to develop cross-border partnerships, giving Hungarian SMEs the chance to enter the international market and improve their digital maturity. This has proved to be a very successful activity: the evaluators selected 1 Serbian-Hungarian, 2 Hungarian-Italian, 1 Hungarian and 1 Turkish projects from the experiments developed by us:

1. CAADEX Kft (Hungarian) – DSS Consulting Zrt (Hungarian)- University of Kragujevac (Serbian):
experiment title: Digitization And Optimization Of Snow Guards Manufacturing ProcessThe experiment targeted the optimization of CAADEX manufacturing processes by using the software of DSS (software developer) for simulation and modeling. DSS developed a discrete event simulation model in the cloud, which could be customized and used for the case of CAADEX to optimize the operation of the two machines. It collects data and prepares simulations (digital twins). The University of Kragujevac provided specific expertise to this aspect of the project.

2. Restart Automation and Robotics (Italian) – IDM-Systems Zrt (Hungarian) – CNR-IMATI (Italian):
experiment title: Digital Twin For Agile Changes (DITAC)The DITAC project focused on the investigation and implementation of methodologies to introduce Digital Twin-based solutions to the design process at Restart Srl, an SME specialized in supply (from design to material realization) of tailor-made industrial automation solutions to provide important support in case of after-sales changes. In the Restart case, after-sales requests for changes from the final user are not isolated and they request significant work on the machine, causing interruption of work/production. The DITAC project aimed to reduce the efforts needed for an after-sale change, providing virtual support/simulation for the required design changes.

3. Premet Kft (Hungarian) – CNR-IMATI (Italian) – Opendot (Italian):
experiment title: Production Optimization For Additive Manufacturing Of Medical Devices (ProMED)The main objective of ProMED was to optimize the production of customized metal medical devices through the combined use of additive and subtractive manufacturing. This hybrid technique, often referred to as Sint & Mill (S&M), consists in creating a semi-finished product with a 3D printer and subsequently applying precision CNC milling for surface finishing. The experiment aimed at finding whether the end user PREMET can reduce production costs and/or improve product quality, both by choosing the right fabrication parameters. A digital twin of PREMET's production pipeline was developed and used to quickly simulate a large number of fabrication processes. The rich set of "virtual" data produced by the simulation is used to train an intelligent module that is eventually able to support PREMET in its decisions for real productions.

4. EN-CO Software Zrt (Hungarian) – Karlwood Kft (Hungarian) – Deodat 21 Bt (Hungarian):
experiment title: Beerpredictor, A Predictive Tool For Breweries To Optimize The Beer Mashing ProcessWhile the adoption of “smart” brewing technologies has given a significant boost to the production effectiveness of the brewing industry, certain critical issues - most importantly, the complexities of the mashing process - still miss game-changing technological solutions. To date, the optimal mashing process – which sets some of the very essence of the style of the beer – has been determined by breweries manually, through producing trial brews and series of sampling, resulting in inefficiencies, greater costs, and incremental revenue loss. The project’s objective is to tackle this challenge by developing a digital simulation (the product, BeerPredictor), which supports setting and defining the correct mashing parameters, allowing small independent brewers to meet the specified carbohydrate composition of a particular beer style without intensive and costly manual tests – trial-and-error approaches - and analytical follow-up, based on the malt batch analytical parameters.

5. Mayteks (Turkish) – Eliar (Turkish):
experiment title: Anomaly Detection, Modeling, And Adaptive Control Of Textile Dyeing Temperature Control Phases

Textile dyeing is one of the main processes in the textile sector. The textile dyeing process is a batch process and each factory has around 40 dyeing machines. The temperature control of the dye liquid in the textile dyeing machine is a phase of the textile dyeing process that takes about 70% of the dyeing duration. Correct and optimal temperature control is inevitable for the quality of the desired color and decreasing color repairs which results in savings in steam, energy, water, chemical, and dye usage. The aim is to optimize the temperature control of the machines by means of finding anomalies, creating a digital twin of the temperature control phase, and implementing adaptive control algorithms based on PI control.

By connecting cross-border partners, creating experiments, and mentoring them throughout the project, innomine has enabled many SMEs to gain international partnerships, international visibility, and easy access to innovative technologies such as digital twin.

innomine main activity was the experiment deployment and execution during the whole DIGITbrain project (3 years).  We coordinated and overviewed the task's overall progress, while we were acting as a DIH as well and were assigned to support individual experiments in the implementation process. We provided „the bridge” between the participating experiment partners and the technical experts of the consortium that supported the experiments in technical issues when accessing the Digital Brain Data, Resources, Models, Algorithms etc.The experiments involved in the project were selected through 2 open-call processes by a committee of independent experts. innomine was also instrumental in finding and selecting the right experiment partners. Drawing on our own extensive international network, we were working to develop cross-border partnerships, giving Hungarian SMEs the chance to enter the international market and improve their digital maturity. This has proved to be a very successful activity: the evaluators selected 1 Serbian-Hungarian, 2 Hungarian-Italian, 1 Hungarian and 1 Turkish projects from the experiments developed by us:

1. CAADEX Kft (Hungarian) – DSS Consulting Zrt (Hungarian)- University of Kragujevac (Serbian):
experiment title: Digitization And Optimization Of Snow Guards Manufacturing ProcessThe experiment targeted the optimization of CAADEX manufacturing processes by using the software of DSS (software developer) for simulation and modeling. DSS developed a discrete event simulation model in the cloud, which could be customized and used for the case of CAADEX to optimize the operation of the two machines. It collects data and prepares simulations (digital twins). The University of Kragujevac provided specific expertise to this aspect of the project.

2. Restart Automation and Robotics (Italian) – IDM-Systems Zrt (Hungarian) – CNR-IMATI (Italian):
experiment title: Digital Twin For Agile Changes (DITAC)The DITAC project focused on the investigation and implementation of methodologies to introduce Digital Twin-based solutions to the design process at Restart Srl, an SME specialized in supply (from design to material realization) of tailor-made industrial automation solutions to provide important support in case of after-sales changes. In the Restart case, after-sales requests for changes from the final user are not isolated and they request significant work on the machine, causing interruption of work/production. The DITAC project aimed to reduce the efforts needed for an after-sale change, providing virtual support/simulation for the required design changes.

3. Premet Kft (Hungarian) – CNR-IMATI (Italian) – Opendot (Italian):
experiment title: Production Optimization For Additive Manufacturing Of Medical Devices (ProMED)The main objective of ProMED was to optimize the production of customized metal medical devices through the combined use of additive and subtractive manufacturing. This hybrid technique, often referred to as Sint & Mill (S&M), consists in creating a semi-finished product with a 3D printer and subsequently applying precision CNC milling for surface finishing. The experiment aimed at finding whether the end user PREMET can reduce production costs and/or improve product quality, both by choosing the right fabrication parameters. A digital twin of PREMET's production pipeline was developed and used to quickly simulate a large number of fabrication processes. The rich set of "virtual" data produced by the simulation is used to train an intelligent module that is eventually able to support PREMET in its decisions for real productions.

4. EN-CO Software Zrt (Hungarian) – Karlwood Kft (Hungarian) – Deodat 21 Bt (Hungarian):
experiment title: Beerpredictor, A Predictive Tool For Breweries To Optimize The Beer Mashing ProcessWhile the adoption of “smart” brewing technologies has given a significant boost to the production effectiveness of the brewing industry, certain critical issues - most importantly, the complexities of the mashing process - still miss game-changing technological solutions. To date, the optimal mashing process – which sets some of the very essence of the style of the beer – has been determined by breweries manually, through producing trial brews and series of sampling, resulting in inefficiencies, greater costs, and incremental revenue loss. The project’s objective is to tackle this challenge by developing a digital simulation (the product, BeerPredictor), which supports setting and defining the correct mashing parameters, allowing small independent brewers to meet the specified carbohydrate composition of a particular beer style without intensive and costly manual tests – trial-and-error approaches - and analytical follow-up, based on the malt batch analytical parameters.

5. Mayteks (Turkish) – Eliar (Turkish):

Textile dyeing is one of the main processes in the textile sector. The textile dyeing process is a batch process and each factory has around 40 dyeing machines. The temperature control of the dye liquid in the textile dyeing machine is a phase of the textile dyeing process that takes about 70% of the dyeing duration. Creating cross-border experiments for the DIGITbrain open call and Experiment management and coordination.

Management of technology pilots
innomine main activity was the experiment deployment and execution during the whole DIGITbrain project (3 years).  We coordinated and overviewed the task's overall progress, while we were acting as a DIH as well and were assigned to support individual experiments in the implementation process. We provided „the bridge” between the participating experiment partners and the technical experts of the consortium that supported the experiments in technical issues when accessing the Digital Brain Data, Resources, Models, Algorithms etc.The experiments involved in the project were selected through 2 open-call processes by a committee of independent experts. innomine was also instrumental in finding and selecting the right experiment partners. Drawing on our own extensive international network, we were working to develop cross-border partnerships, giving Hungarian SMEs the chance to enter the international market and improve their digital maturity. This has proved to be a very successful activity: the evaluators selected 1 Serbian-Hungarian, 2 Hungarian-Italian, 1 Hungarian and 1 Turkish projects from the experiments developed by us:

1. CAADEX Kft (Hungarian) – DSS Consulting Zrt (Hungarian)- University of Kragujevac (Serbian):
experiment title: Digitization And Optimization Of Snow Guards Manufacturing ProcessThe experiment targeted the optimization of CAADEX manufacturing processes by using the software of DSS (software developer) for simulation and modeling. DSS developed a discrete event simulation model in the cloud, which could be customized and used for the case of CAADEX to optimize the operation of the two machines. It collects data and prepares simulations (digital twins). The University of Kragujevac provided specific expertise to this aspect of the project.

2. Restart Automation and Robotics (Italian) – IDM-Systems Zrt (Hungarian) – CNR-IMATI (Italian):
experiment title: Digital Twin For Agile Changes (DITAC)The DITAC project focused on the investigation and implementation of methodologies to introduce Digital Twin-based solutions to the design process at Restart Srl, an SME specialized in supply (from design to material realization) of tailor-made industrial automation solutions to provide important support in case of after-sales changes. In the Restart case, after-sales requests for changes from the final user are not isolated and they request significant work on the machine, causing interruption of work/production. The DITAC project aimed to reduce the efforts needed for an after-sale change, providing virtual support/simulation for the required design changes.

3. Premet Kft (Hungarian) – CNR-IMATI (Italian) – Opendot (Italian):
experiment title: Production Optimization For Additive Manufacturing Of Medical Devices (ProMED)The main objective of ProMED was to optimize the production of customized metal medical devices through the combined use of additive and subtractive manufacturing. This hybrid technique, often referred to as Sint & Mill (S&M), consists in creating a semi-finished product with a 3D printer and subsequently applying precision CNC milling for surface finishing. The experiment aimed at finding whether the end user PREMET can reduce production costs and/or improve product quality, both by choosing the right fabrication parameters. A digital twin of PREMET's production pipeline was developed and used to quickly simulate a large number of fabrication processes. The rich set of "virtual" data produced by the simulation is used to train an intelligent module that is eventually able to support PREMET in its decisions for real productions.

4. EN-CO Software Zrt (Hungarian) – Karlwood Kft (Hungarian) – Deodat 21 Bt (Hungarian):
experiment title: Beerpredictor, A Predictive Tool For Breweries To Optimize The Beer Mashing ProcessWhile the adoption of “smart” brewing technologies has given a significant boost to the production effectiveness of the brewing industry, certain critical issues - most importantly, the complexities of the mashing process - still miss game-changing technological solutions. To date, the optimal mashing process – which sets some of the very essence of the style of the beer – has been determined by breweries manually, through producing trial brews and series of sampling, resulting in inefficiencies, greater costs, and incremental revenue loss. The project’s objective is to tackle this challenge by developing a digital simulation (the product, BeerPredictor), which supports setting and defining the correct mashing parameters, allowing small independent brewers to meet the specified carbohydrate composition of a particular beer style without intensive and costly manual tests – trial-and-error approaches - and analytical follow-up, based on the malt batch analytical parameters.

5. Mayteks (Turkish) – Eliar (Turkish):
experiment title: Anomaly Detection, Modeling, And Adaptive Control Of Textile Dyeing Temperature Control Phases

Textile dyeing is one of the main processes in the textile sector. The textile dyeing process is a batch process and each factory has around 40 dyeing machines. The temperature control of the dye liquid in the textile dyeing machine is a phase of the textile dyeing process that takes about 70% of the dyeing duration. Correct and optimal temperature control is inevitable for the quality of the desired color and decreasing color repairs which results in savings in steam, energy, water, chemical, and dye usage. The aim is to optimize the temperature control of the machines by means of finding anomalies, creating a digital twin of the temperature control phase, and implementing adaptive control algorithms based on PI control.

ProAgro introduces digital solutions, encourage their use, support access to resources, explore and present direct EU funding opportunities, and transfer national and international good practices to local businesses. With the initiative, innomine is putting agri-food businesses in a position to succeed, helps businesses address their challenges in a business-centric and service-oriented way.

In the project period of 1-year Innomine provided services to many agri-food SMEs concerning the overall life cycle of a project, from scouting of opportunities, proposal writing, initiation, definition and design, to development, implementation and follow up. Also, we have facilitated and informed individuals or enterprises about the process of arranging access to different funding sources (private or public) and supported them with developing proposals, thus promoted the growth of entrepreneurs, start-ups as well as established companies by exploiting growth and investment opportunities.

As a result, below innovation projects were supported by Innomine 

Title: Smooth food and beverage packaging line operation in an SME - Pécsi Sörfőzde 
Technology used: Modelling and simulationThis innovation project focuses on an accumulation packaging line of a South Hungarian brewery- Pécsi Sörfőzde Zrt. The separate machines are connected with conveyors. The machines run in a stop and go modus. Before and after the machine sensors detect the load on the conveyors and switches the machines. By using the modelling and simulation technology the project targets a harmonization of the single machine operation to a regulated operation to improve line efficiency, product quality, reduce utility consumption and maintenance cost. The project aiming to optimize the pasteurization process to be more economical and efficient won an EU funding. After the implementation of the project, an important goal is to share knowledge and transfer knowledge and technology to other sectors. The know-how can also be transferred to wineries.

By profiling the partners using the agricultural and food digital transformation tool developed in the ProAgro project we got a good idea of the level of maturity of the partners, not only in terms of digitization but also in terms of application capabilities. The survey showed the companies project ideas and their capabilities of implementation. We became aware of the level of the company in the requirements for international applications (eg minimum English language skills). Our already established network and the conducted agri- and food digital maturity tool and methodology allowed us to identify digitalization related project ideas and to create a pool of partners able to apply for EC calls or other international fundings.

As a results, in the 1 year project period we were able to bring in 3 partners into a Horizon Europe call, selected, validated and submitted 7 proposals to different cascade funding calls (Demeter, BOWI, Digitbrain).

Our results show that knowing our partners in term of digital and innovation maturity is very important. By using the ProAgro agri-food digital transformation tool and methodology, we can not only suggest steps to improve digitization, but also identify needs that can be turned into project plans that can be a good topic for EU cascade funding. Innomine DIH continues to help national and international agri-food businesses to address their challenges in a business-centric and service-oriented way, and making available to any business to access the latest knowledge, expertise and technology.

As the digital transformation became more important to build and maintain resilience, keep up in the sever business environment, innomine faced increasing need of consultancy on this field. Based on its vast related experience developed Digital Maturity Assessment Tool. 

A systematic self-assessment helps companies to have the top-level evaluation of its digital readiness. Moreover, comparison with fellow industry members orient business management to evaluate the status of their organization. Our Digital Readiness Assessment integrate various dimensions, which are vital to draw a full picture of the company.

These are: Digital Strategy, Company Culture, Value Creation Process, Supporting Process, Customer Experience and IT. There are several similar tools available internationally, but the challenge was to develop a methodology, which are tailored for the Hungarian small businesses, and helps homogenic understanding of the terms. The concept of the assessment tool focuses on the consciousness, readiness and willingness of digitalization. The tool uses multiple-choice questions with pre-set answers, which ensure the solid understanding cross the different respondents.

The automated evaluation provides a Digital Readiness Index, which is compared against industry average – helping the partners to see their maturity status.Based on the evaluation innomine able to help SMEs to build the strategy and action plan, which takes the company further on the digital transformation journey.

        The Business Promotion & Development Campus (BPDC) is an innovation center operating as part of the Embassy of Hungary in Washington D.C. which offers – beyond the physical amenities – development program for the Hungarian companies aiming to enter the USA market. Its mission was also to help Hungarian companies with networking options by introducing them to the local business communities.

        innomine – as the selected professional implementer - was commissioned to organize boot camps: find, recruit, assess and select relevant companies, compose and deliver enablement program, organize first pitches and business meetings, networking events.

        innomine organized five cohort of companies during 2019-2021. Based on our experiences and own methodology it was paramount, that local (US) trainers and mentors help the development of the Hungarian SMEs. In cooperation with our US partners a multilevel program has been composed, covering business planning, sales, pitching, marketing. Experts selected from top American companies’ executives worked with the management of Hungarian SMEs in order to prepare them for the US market activity. The Hungarian SMEs were coming mainly from the ITC industry, but agriculture and gree business has been also represented – both established mature companies and start-ups.
